OVERVIEW

This introductory workshop provides a great opportunity to learn from the founder of CFT, Professor Paul Gilbert, who is visiting Australia from the UK and is providing this training opportunity in Brisbane with Dr Hayley Quinn.

Compassion focused therapy (CFT) is an integrative psychotherapy model that focuses on the cultivation and application of compassion for both self and others. CFT integrates cognitive-behavioural therapy techniques with evolutionary, developmental and social psychology, affective neuroscience and Buddhist psychology. The approach was developed for clients with high levels of self criticism and shame. It has a growing evidence base for a variety of clinical disorders and presentations.

Practising compassion has been shown to have powerful effects on physiological, psychological and social processes, specifically in the regulation of threat-focused emotional experiences and the development of a caring orientation to suffering. This introductory workshop is designed to encourage the use of practices that stimulate compassionate mental states and those that build a sense of the compassionate self-identity.

WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES

- Gain an understanding of how evolutionary functional analysis advances our understanding of mental health difficulties, and in particular the importance of the evolution of attachment, caring and affiliation as part of the human affect motivation and regulation system.

- Gain an understanding of the three system affect regulation model (threat, drive and affiliative-soothing) which informs compassion-focused interventions.

- Be exposed to key compassion-focused skills including the use of the breath and body postures, the practice of compassion focused imagery, the use of compassionate mind training to build the "compassionate self", employing the "compassionate self" to engage with areas of personal difficulty, and building supportive social relationships.

- Gain an understanding of how CFT may be applied to clients with different problems in which there is a non-affiliative relationship with self and/or others (e.g anxiety, depression, shame, eating disorders, personality disorders, psychosis, etc)

- Participants will complete the workshop with an understanding of the flows of compassion: compassion to others, being open to compassion from others, and compassion to self

 WHO IS THIS SUITABLE FOR?

This workshop is suitable for practitioners from any theoretical background. The workshop will include interactive teaching, practical exercises, self-reflection and group discussions. No prior knowledge of CFT is required.

Dr Hayley D Quinn

Dr Hayley Quinn PhD is an experienced Clinical Psychologist and the current President of Compassionate Mind Australia. Hayley runs her own private clinical practice, with a particular focus on Compassion Focused Therapy. Hayley has a particular interest in assisting people experiencing anxiety, trauma related issues, chronic pain, and grief and loss. Hayley has worked in various settings including community, multicultural and hospital-based settings. Hayley's previous work facilitating a day program within a specialised trauma unit allowed her to deepen her understanding of the harmful impacts of fear, shame and loss of connection, and to clarify the important role of compassion when working with clients. Hayley is passionate about the role of personal practice in assisting clinicians to cultivate a caring orientation to suffering within themselves and others. She believes that supporting clinicians to incorporate compassion focused practice into their lives and work increases their capacity for caring, courage and wisdom.
